Rid the United States of Atheism?

Down with the athesits? This is an actual copy of a submission to an editorial page proclaiming we should rid the United States of all Atheists because they are the cause of all the crime. Yeah, OK! Alice Shannon, you get an Idiot of year award! Maybe we should rid the world of you!

All religions and beliefs are “fair game” MissMoose, but “Christianity” (in all it’s forms) being the dominant belief system on this planet, just happens to be the biggest and most publicized target.

What’s really “sad” is that humans are just as stupid today as they were more than 2000 years ago.

It’s sad to see such close minded comments. However she might be partially true when she says “ruin of this great nation by taking prayer out of our schools”. If only she got to pray a little bit more in school, maybe…just maybe she would’ve gotten pass third grade. Well, we’ll all “pray” for you Alice or Shannon (which ever is your first name), that one day you will be lifted from your trailer park and into a better place. Until then, keep praying and god will probably help you wash that swastika off your forehead.

Sometimes things we “don’t recall” are things we were never taught, prevented from being taught, or never bothered to learn.

Ignorance of the law has been used for centuries in the United States as an argument to justify disallowing the uneducated, mal-educated or dis-educated from voting.

This is an example of how a misinformed uneducated public, is the best customer a tyranny can have.

Thank you Republican party for holding down the budgets for schools and teachers salaries. Now you may reap the fruits of your oppression by plunging us all into the abyss of fascism, tyranny and Corporate rule.

Now there are SO many intentionally uneducated and dis-informed people educated people can finally do anything and get away with it.

The lie that can find corporate sponsorship for advertizing becomes the truth.

A-L-L US cable and print “News” has become entertainment, marketing, disinformation, and psychological warfare. Anything but news and factual analysis.

All corporately funded, to promote the interests of corporations, and to turn American civilians into brainwashed flag waving, corrupt, self destructionist voters.

Big media is the “big lie”.

MissMoose, nothing personal… but that claim is absurd. The fact that letter got printed at all is a proof enough of that, that Falwell was on TV for so many years is proof of that, and the fact that we have never had a president who wasn’t a believer is proof of that (and I won’t even get into the beliefs of our current president being proof also.) A nut job is a nut job and calling them a nut job regardless of their religious belief doesn’t mean you’re discriminating against their belief… it just means they’re a nut job. People would have called an atheist, a buddhist, an agnostic, or a jew a nut job for espousing the same beliefs. Grow up– every time someone disagrees with something is not discrimination.

Sorry, lady, but the state forcing people to pick a god (which is what would happen if her interpretation of things were enforced) is not freedom in any sense of the word. Freedom of religion DOES mean freedom from religion because the spirit of that amendment is understood to mean freedom WITH RESPECT to religion (this includes lack thereof). Morality has been around much longer than Christianity and atheists are perfectly capable of valuing democracy as much as you (ironically, perhaps more so).

We are all idiots because we focus so hard on what we feel comfortable believing that we fail to consider the beliefs of others. You failing to have compassion for this lady is no worse than her lack of compassion for anyone who does not believe in God just as her lack of compassion is no worse than yours. Before you condemn, at least try to love.

    Mick,
There is a difference between belief and reason. Ms. Shannon believes Atheists are evil without evidence. She believes Christian Dogma without evidence. There is ample evidence to accept evolution or that the president is an idiot. Ms. Shannon’s letter is ample evidence that she is an idiot. Don’t lump together superstition and reason.

You think she’s whacked? I think she’s lip-synching the ideas, fed to her, by mainstream Christianity (fundamentalist).

She believes that she is a God Warriors. Everyone is either fighting for God, or fighting against him, and she is his chosen spokesmen. Unfortunately, God gets to have some, who are idiots, speak for him.

These people want to control the government, control the Courts, control Congress. So they can make sure that all Law is based on the Bible. This seems much like Christian Taliban rule.

Kick out some Atheists, no big deal. To the big picture, it is small.

People should at least read it before quoting it.

Amendment 1 – Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Notice the “MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING AN ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION”

They could easily have said, we are christian or something like that but they didn’t.

It is sad how religion always speaks of justice, but it in itself causes genocide, corruption, etc… Does this Alice chick realize that according to the Bible Christ came to unite the people, NOT SEGREGATE. I’m not an Athiest, but not being able to coexist with other religions is evil in itself. Christians are not the only guilty party either. It does not make sense to think that God will choose a religion over another. Saying a rapist can be saved and go to heaven, while a good hearted, never committed a major sin in their life athiest will not is Bullshit.

  36. Manakin says:

OK… who is this lady to vouch for the majority of Americans? I know she doesn’t have my support.

There is no written rule that says we have to believe in anything. And the fact that the author of the letter lists only Christian denominations leads me to believe that she thinks the United States is supposed to be a Christian nation.

George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison have all been found to have ties to Deism. Deism is NOT Christianity.

When it comes to handling money, I really don’t see coins burning through Atheists’ hands or anything like that. Most atheists I know don’t really give a damn.

Atheists didn’t take prayer out of schools. If anyone can take responsibility for that, it’s the American Civil Liberties Union. Their purpose is to uphold the Bill of Rights to the letter. They stand for the protection of EVERYONE’S rights, not just those who choose to pray.

What exactly is it that is being practiced that can “only be called evil”?

As far as violence goes… how about all of the drug dealers and gang members running around killing innocent people while wearing crosses around their necks? Somehow, I don’t think atheism is the cause of this…
